New Hair Chapter: Manic Panic-Vampire Red
It should come as no surprise to those of you who have read my previous blogs and/or know me in real life that I have started yet another chapter in my hair dye history. After giving my hair a bit of a break (about 4 ½ months) I couldn’t handle it anymore and decided I needed a change. And this time I meant business.
After seeing Hayley Williams Hair colour (pictured left) I fell in love with the colour and decided that was how I wanted mine. So off I went in search of the perfect colour. I went to my local Price Attack who have always helped me in the past and showed them the picture of what I wanted. They advised me to bleach my hair first to a light blonde-orangey colour and then gave me a Fudge semi-permanent to use.
After instilling the help of my good friend (and personal hairdresser) Bonnie, we bleached and dyed my hair.
However, the colour ended up being a LOT darker than what I wanted, and more of a brown red. I didn’t like it at all. So I searched online for colours and found http://www.manicpanic.com/ .
After looking through all their “Dyehard” pictures, I settled on Vampire Red (right). I ended up ordering a tub off ebay as it was a bit cheaper.
Then I set about washing out my current dye, which was an effort. A few days later I again had Bonnie (I owe you big time!) put in the dye for me (on damp, shampooed hair).
And I love the results! It is a tiny bit more pink than I wanted, but I actually really like the colour. I think it is bold enough that it is a bit different, but not too out-there that it will be an issue at work (I hope!).

Looks great! Will have to try the Manic Panic brand colours.
How light was your hair when you bleached it? And what Fudge colour did you use? because my hair is extremely light blonde, nearly white and want to try out fudge, but i dont want the colour to be too bright! And would quite like a darker red.
Hi Sophie,
Unfortunately I didn’t take pictures of my hair colour before I dyed it, but I bleached it to an orangey colour, just before it went yellow and blonde (I was told to only lift it to this colour by a hairdresser). I used Manic Panic hair dye in their shade “Vampire Red” (I have used Fudge before, and found they faded fairly quickly, and tended to fade to ‘yucky’ colours. Manic Panic will last longer, is more gentle on your hair and fades a lot nicer).
If your hair is already very light, I would check out my most recent blog (http://www.slightcaseofinsanity.com/2010/01/manic-panic-vampire-red-on-bleached-hair/), as I used the same dye again, but this time I bleached my hair a lot lighter. I put pictures there of the end result, and it came out BRIGHT. I was after a darker, more cherry red as well, so next time am going to try Special Effects dye instead, as they seem to have some slightly darker dyes, and better reds. “Vampire Red” was too pink for me.
Ah okay thanks for your help, are the Manic Panic ones all semi perminant? I like the look of the colour blood red. But i think whatever i decide to use I will do a tester strip first as i dont want to completely kill my hair! Also is the Special Effects dye semi perminant? I have a really good colour at home which was SCHWARZKOPF Country Colors Grand Canyon Red. But I found it faded pretty quickly.
Yeah all the Manic Panic ones are semi permanent, whereas the Special Effects ones are demi-permanent.
The difference between semi & demi permanent hair colours are as follows:
I have dark brown hair and I want to dye it red with Vampire Red Manic Panic. If I leave it on long enough I know it will leave a nice color but what will the color turn after it’s faded? Will it go back to brown or be an ugly red?
If you haven’t bleached your hair at all before dyeing it, the red will simply wash out, so will go back to your natural brown colour. Not sure how long this would take as will depend on how porous your hair is. It may maintain a slight red tinge for awhile or it may completely wash out after a few shampoos.
If you find it goes to an ugly red and you want to get the rest of it out (either permanently or to re-dye it again), check out my post on removing hair dye: http://www.slightcaseofinsanity.com/2009/12/tips-for-removing-hair-dye-faster/
Good luck!
