Manic Panic – Vampire Red (on bleached hair)

I decided to give Manic Panic “Vampire Red” another go. My first attempt had turned out like this:

Although I didn’t mind the colour, I wanted it brighter (and less pink). So I thought I’d see how light I could bleach my hair first in order to get a really vibrant colour. And how it would turn out on a ‘blank canvas’ so to speak.

This was how light I managed to get it before the ends of my hair started breaking off.

I will admit I was a bit worried at first, as I have never had breakage this bad before (and still can’t figure out what caused it as I did nothing different). So I gave my hair a break for a few days to help restore it a bit before re-dying. I just constantly lathered on my Goldwell Rich Repair leave-in conditioner and did the occasional Redken CAT Protein Treatment.

Once it was feeling stronger, I again applied my Manic Panic “Vampire Red”. I left it in for 5 hours (same as I did the first time).

However, THIS time, to avoid staining my whole house, I had my boyfriend help me rinse it out on the lawn with the garden house. Yes, classy, I know! But it worked a charm. Once the water was running almost clear, I just jumped into the shower and finished off the rinsing job. No stained skin, minimal tile stainage. Much less messy and inconvenient than my previous experiences with it.

But holy jeebus, the colour is BRIGHT! And, unfortunately, more pink than my first try (godamnit!).

Whilst I have received so many compliments on it, is is really just too pink for my liking. I do love the intensity of the colour though, and it gives a really strong even coverage.

So, after chatting with some friends I have already decided on my next experiment; I will be trying Special Effects brand dye and mixing their “Nuclear Red” with “Blood Red” together (at this stage in equal parts).

I am trying to achieve a more cherry red colour, but without going too dark. So we shall see!

  1. WOW! that is bright!! praps it is the colour variation from the photography coz I can’t see the pink you refer to in these photo’s. very very bright though :)

  2. Yeah I think it looks more pink in real life, but I still wanted a more cherry red colour. Oh well, just try, try again!

  3. I recently used Vampire Red as well and it turned out this same color which was not at all the color I wanted. I like it but now I found out I have a job interview at TSA on Tuesday so I must get rid oft this.

  4. Glad it wasn’t just me who found the colour so different! To get rid of the colour quickly check out my post here.
