The latest experiment: SFX Devilish + Nuclear Red

So I completely forgot I hadn’t yet posted a blog about my latest hair dye experiment. I apologise profusely, but hope that what I lack in time management skills I make up for in wit, charm and a complete lack of resistance to testing colour concoctions out on my hair for my lovely readers benefit (you can thank me when I’m bald)!

My most recent attempt was, again using Special Effects (SFX), mixing Devilish and Nuclear Red. I didn’t like how pink the Blood Red + Nuclear Red came out in my last session, so thought I’d try something with a bit more punch to it. Enter SFX Devilish.

Prior to dyeing my hair this time I again used Johnson’s Baby Shampoo to strip as much old colour out as possible, and then rebleached my roots (as I had a lovely few inches of brown and was looking ever so classy).

This is what my hair looked like post root-bleaching, ready for dyeing:

I mixed the two colours together in equal parts. I applied all over as normal and left it in for around 3 hrs. I rinsed in cold water (as always) and shampooed (yes, a hair dyeing faux pas, I know! I just don’t have the patience to stand under cold water in the shower for hours until the runs clear) with a normal De Lorenzo shampoo for coloured hair (not sure of the name, but is in a purple bottle), then conditioned with my beloved Goldwell Rich Repair conditioner (BEST conditioner ever). After washing my hair I applied my Redken CAT Leave-in Protein Treatment and left it to dry naturally.

This was the result:

Now, I always use a colour shampoo for red hair as it helps maintain the colour longer (as well as washing in cold water, blah blah).

I tossed up this time between my normal one (a ‘claret’ red) and the other red (a ‘firey’ red) both by De Lorenzo. As my hair had turned out quite red already from the dye, I opted for the ‘claret’ to bring down the brightness of it a tad.

As I have previously noticed it makes quit a difference to my hair colour over time, I decided to take a couple of photos to show the changes.

This is my hair after the colour shampoo (Before -> 1 wash -> 5 washes):

This was quite a awhile ago, and my colour is starting to look a bit ratty:

Overall I like the effect the colour shampoo had on my hair as it toned down the brightness of the red a tad.

However I will admit, I am getting a little tired trying to maintain these wacky colours all the time, so have been considering a change soon. But more of that in my next post!

Happy hair adventures!!

  1. Kate, I used to dye my hair every school holidays. One time I decided to go blonde and haven’t gone back (minus one stint of brown when I was 18). I’ve been mulberry, blueberry, red hair (like yours after one wash), black, yellow. My favourite was blueberry. You should do that on top of bleached hair. Would look wicked because you look good with dark hair.
    Erin.

  2. Hey Erin, I have actually thought of doing my hair a really dark blue. SFX has a great one. I will definitely have to check out a dark blueberry as I’m wanting to go back to a dark colour, but something a bit interesting still. Thanks for the suggestion!

  3. Looks great! I really need to bleach the shit out of my hair and get a good colour in there again. It’s such a dirty colour at the moment. Icko.

  4. Mine too (as you can see from the most recent picture). But at the moment I have neither the time nor the $$ to maintain the vibrancy these awesome colours deserve so am going to go a more ‘normal’ colour (and a much darker colour) for awhile. I also probably need to give my hair a bit of a break from all the bleaching and just go easy on it for a little while too. I think it’s earned a rest!
